Orientation to the Canadian Health Care System, Culture and Context
is a course designed for internationally educated health professionals who are in the process of becoming licensed in Canada. It is offered three times per year.

This course will provide learners with a deepened understanding of the Canadian health care system, what Canadian patients expect from their health care providers, and how to communicate with patients and caregivers. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with other internationally educated health care professionals in a supportive learning environment.

What Previous Participants Have Said:

"With the help of the course and the discussion we had about the Canadian health care delivery system, I was able to pass the Canadian RN examination given last June 3, 2009. It's really a big help, especially for a newly landed Immigrant like me. I am very excited on the coming days to upgrade profession from a PSW to a Registered Nurse in Canada. And I thank you all for that."
- Orientation participant, Winter 2009 online course

"I would like to thank everyone involved in the provision of this course as they are doing a great job and I want you to know that I still log into the site at least once a week to find out anything new. Since I finished the course, I became a fellow in the college of surgeons of Canada after passing the certification exam, without practising a single day in Canada. This is a major achievement and I am sure the course helped me so much to understand the medical environment in Canada and prepared me to the practise. I now have a job in the university of Western Ontario to start at the beginning of 2010. Again without your help, I wouldn't have sailed through the interview."
- Orientation participant, Winter 2009 online course

"The course had tremendously helped me in understanding the health care setting in Canada.  The outline adheres to the current settings and needs in the industry.  And most importantly, the facilitators give superb input and enhance the learning skills of the participants."

The University of Toronto gratefully acknowledges the generous contribution and unrestricted access to the Orientation for IEHPs Curriculum originally developed by Kathryn Allen, at the RN-Professional Development Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Given without condition, this gesture was significant, serving both as a foundation for the national curriculum, and a display of interprovincial collaboration.
